9 Best Coffee Shops In Amsterdam

1. Grey Area

Green House Coffeeshops Amsterdam | Green House United

This iconic hangout has been patronised by many cannabis-conscious celebrities over the years, including eminent stoners like Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson. Held in high esteem by consumers the world over, Grey Area’s reputation is definitely well deserved – it has an extensive selection of award-winning cannabis and a back-to-basics vibe that lets its gear speak for itself. Word to the wise: don’t expect much leg room in Grey Area. It’s notoriously small.

2. Green House United

Make sure to look down when you enter this one-of-a-kind coffeeshop, as its floor features a large aquarium filled with exotic fish. Aside from its watery centrepiece, Green House United boasts around 10 smaller and larger tables surrounded by stools and long, comfy benches. Its stripped-back layout is a perfect match for the mellow vibe, creating a welcoming space where customers can relax with a spliff – while ogling the fish below.

3. The Bulldog The First

Founded way back in 1974, when cannabis was still illegal, The Bulldog The First is the longest-running coffeeshop in the city. The whole place serves as a monument to weed culture and its smoking lounge features heaps of memorabilia from the heyday of Amsterdam’s underground coffeeshops. World-famous and located in the heart of the Red Light District, The Bulldog The First tends to receive a lot of footfall, especially at the weekend.

4. Abraxas Coffeeshop

Abraxas | Coffeeshops | Amsterdam

This super-central yet secluded coffeeshop stands on a small alleyway due south of Dam Square. Given its spacious layout, Abraxas feels considerably larger than most other coffeeshops in the centre, giving patrons space to breathe (or spark up). The two-level smoking lounge is fitted with carved wooden furniture and mystical motifs, plus a couple of desktop computers hooked up to the web.

5. The Stud

The Stud has been around for quite some time, exactly since 1982. It’s in a small but cute locale, with an open and friendly atmosphere, and you can find both tourists and locals alike, creating a funky ambience. You can also go there just to have a coffee, read a magazine or have a chat. They were awarded the title of ‘best coffeeshop in the Netherlands’ in 2015.

If you are really into their vibe, you can even buy merchandise and clothing from them, ever since 2016!

6. Voyagers

This one is unique as coffee shops go, and well-suited for tourists, as they have a small hotel right above the coffee shop! You can find a wide range of weed strains from Indica to Sativa, as well as edibles. It’s also one of the few coffee shops around that has a different area for those who smoke their joints pure (only with weed), separated from those who smoke weed combined with tobacco. The prices are good and the staff is friendly, so let us know what your experience is.

8. Barney’s Coffee shop

Barney’s is a coffee shop you go if you wanna sit and take your time, they have a couple of other great cafes. Trust us on this one, Barney’s is almost synonymous with Amsterdam. Barney’s are the recipients of multiple “High Times Cup” awards. The coffee shop is located in a 500-year-old landmark building on Haarlemmerstraat, it’s been running for 23 plus years now and had extensive renovations.

9. Papillon Coffeeshop

This coffeeshop in the south of Amsterdam is frequented by locals, which means prices are much more reasonable, and the Van der Helstplein Square, where it’s located, is full of cafés and restaurants packed with locals enjoying time out of their busy day. A black wall painted with blue butterflies greets you outside before you’re welcomed into a fairly modern, monochromatic space with grey walls and couches. Tip: In most coffeeshops, smoking tobacco is prohibited, but at Papillon there is a glass-enclosed smoking room.
