Best Things To Do In Kaohsiung – Taiwan Travel

04:01 26/01/2021

In the past, Kaohsiung never really got the attention it deserved, but in recent years tourists both local and foreign are starting to realize that there’s more to this city than the island’s largest port. Full of night markets, temples, and tons of good restaurants, Taiwan’s second largest city is definitely worth a visit, and while you’re there be sure to follow these best things to do in Kaohsiung.

10 Best Things To Do In Kaohsiung

1. The Old British Consulate

Former British Consulate > Kaohsiung City

This was the first foreign consulate built on Taiwanese soil, and after years of disuse, it has now been fully restored to its original state. Built in 1865, the British Consulate compound consists of the residence, a short hiking trail, and the consulate itself. It’s a bit of a walk to get up the hill, but it’s nice and relaxing up there, and you get a nice view of the harbor.

2. Love Pier

Kaohsiung Harbor is known as the love pier and, to be honest, it is the perfect venue for a first date. There are cafés and bars with outdoor seating and plenty of places for couples to take a walk along the river. If walking just doesn’t do it for you, then you can take a cruise on one of the many riverboats moored by the docks.

3. Lotus Pond

It’s easy to see why this pond (more of a lake) is the city’s most popular attraction. There are around twenty temples on its shores and plenty of bikeways and paths for you to wander. The most interesting, or what some might call unusual, of the structures on the lake are the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. They say it’s good luck to enter the dragon and exit the tiger.

4. Fo Guang Shan Monastery

Fo Guang Shan is a form of humanistic Chinese Buddhism that originated in the late 1960s. Kaohsiung and Fo Guang Shan Monastery are the headquarters for the religion, making this a popular destination for practicing and aspiring monks as well as tourists.

Fo Guang Shan is a 45-minute bus ride from central Kaohsiung, so you’ll have to pay for the bus fare to get there. It’s only a couple of dollars and well worth it!

5. Kaohsiung Central Park

Central Park is an underrated Kaohsiung attraction. It’s located in central Kaohsiung and is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours.

Inside the park, you can visit Kaohsiung Main Library and explore the various displays. You can also visit the Speaker’s Corner, an area of the park where locals like to gather to exercise, hang out, and play games.

6. Kaohsiung Museum of History

Of all the free things to do in Kaohsiung, I think the museum of history is probably the most underrated attraction! It’s a very small museum, but it offers a lot of information.

The museum is located right off Love River in an old government building. Exhibits discuss Kaohsiung’s history as a port town as well as the February 28 Massacre, a sombre but important part of Kaohsiung’s and Taiwan’s history. I personally think it’s important for tourists to visit the museum and learn about the tragic event.

The museum only has a couple of rooms, and it won’t take you more than 30-45 minutes to tour the exhibits. It’s open from 9am until 5pm Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays).

7. 85 Sky Tower Observation Deck

If you want to start your trip with a city view and you’re wondering ‘what to do in Kaohsiung?’ the best view of Kaohsiung it seems is from the 85 Sky Tower building which is the tallest building in Kaohsiung and not hard to miss.

The closest metro station to 85 Sky Tower is Kaohsiung Exhibition Centre and Sanduo Shopping District.

8. Cijin Island

Cijin Island is one of the 11 districts of Kaohsiung and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the province. The island is best known for its great beaches and numerous restaurants selling amazing seafood. There are places where you can pick fresh produce and watch it being prepared right in front of your eyes. This is the closest it gets to fishing and preparing the meal yourself.

It’s an island situated about 15 minutes from the mainland by ferry. The ride on the Cijin-Goushan ferry costs around NT$15 and is one of the most fun parts of a visit there. Cijin is also accessible from the mainland through tunnels connecting the island with the rest of Kaohsiung.

9. Kaohsiung National Stadium

Being the largest stadium in Taiwan, the Kaohsiung National Stadium attracts a considerable number of visitors all year round. The stadium is recognised around the world as one of the most energy efficient and was built primarily to host the main field events of the 2009 World Games.

Kaohsiung National Stadium can host 55,000 people for concerts and local Taiwan football matches. Designed by a Japanese architect, it’s a marvel just to see from the outside. It’s powered by huge solar panels and generates more power than it uses, putting the excess into the local grid.

10. Liuhe Night Market

Liuhe Tourist Night Market > Kaohsiung City

One of the most famous spots in Taiwan, the Liuhe Night Market offers an enthralling overall experience. It’s most famous for its open-air eating joints and especially the seafood. Make sure you try the eel spaghetti.

Items for sale here include handicrafts, electronic gadgetry, knives and even monkeys! This is an unusual market in that you can barter item for item at some stalls. You can trade your used stuff for something you might actually need and use for a long time to come.
